Entry-level interviews in Uganda range from a short conversation with a private employer to a formal oral interview before a service commission panel, often after a written aptitude test. The questions below are practice prompts, not a prediction of what any panel will ask. Use them to prepare a few honest examples from your studies, industrial training and volunteering, and check your invitation for the exact format and documents.

Know the format before you prepare

Read the invitation carefully. Public recruiters often test before they interview. In 2026 the Education Service Commission held aptitude tests for Education Officer applicants before its oral interviews, and the Judicial Service Commission set aptitude or competence tests for posts such as court clerk, accountant and librarian. The Uganda Public Service Standing Orders allow public service examinations or tests before a candidate is appointed on probation.

Private employers may use a phone call, a practical task or a panel interview. If the format is not stated, ask the person who invited you how long the interview will take and what you should bring.

Prepare documents and logistics

  • Your National ID. The ESC and the JSC both told shortlisted candidates to bring National Identity Cards to their tests.
  • Academic documents, as originals where the notice asks for them. The ESC asked candidates at its oral interviews to bring originals of academic and professional certificates, transcripts and employment related records, and asked online applicants to bring three sets of photocopies of their application forms.
  • Only the items allowed. For its August 2026 aptitude tests, the JSC allowed only pens, the National ID and a calculator, and asked candidates to arrive 30 minutes before the examination time.
  • A plan to arrive early. The ESC said requests to reschedule its June 2026 oral interviews would not be accepted.

For a private employer, bring copies of your CV and certificates in a folder, and confirm the location through a phone number or address on the employer website.

Tell us about yourself

Give a short answer in three parts: what you studied or are doing now, one relevant experience, and why this post interests you. Keep it brief, then stop and let the panel ask more.

Practice answer (fictional, replace with your own details)
I recently completed a Bachelor of Business Administration at [university]. During my industrial training at [organisation], I reconciled petty cash records and helped prepare monthly reports for my supervisor. I enjoyed checking figures and keeping records accurate, which is why this assistant accountant post interests me.

Why do you want this job, and what do you know about us?

Read the advert, the organisation website and any annual report or strategic plan it publishes. Link two duties in the advert to something you have done or studied. For a public post, know what the ministry, agency or local government delivers and where the job is based.

Public service panels look for values as well as skills. Recent PSC adverts list integrity, accountability, impartiality, transparency, respect, responsiveness, patriotism, teamwork and serving public interest. Prepare one short, true example that shows at least one of them, such as handling money honestly during a student project.

Tell us about a time you solved a problem

Use a simple structure: the situation, your task, what you did and the result. Choose examples from industrial training, a class project, family work or volunteering, and spend most of the answer on what you personally did.

Prepare a few stories you can adapt: working in a team, dealing with a difficult person, meeting a deadline and correcting a mistake. Do not invent results you did not measure.

Questions about weaknesses, pay and posting

  • What are your weaknesses? Name a real skill you are improving and what you are doing about it.
  • What salary do you expect? For public posts, the advert gives the salary scale, and the Standing Orders say first appointments start at the minimum of the scale, such as U4 for posts that require an honours degree. For private posts, research the range for similar jobs and give a considered figure or range.
  • Can you work anywhere in Uganda? Answer honestly. District and field posts can mean relocating, so think it through before the interview.
  • Why has your job search taken time? Explain briefly and move on to what you have done since you finished your studies.

Questions you can ask the panel

  • What would the person in this role focus on in the first months?
  • Who would supervise and train the new officer?
  • How is performance assessed during probation?
  • When and how will candidates hear the outcome?

Ask one or two questions that show you listened. Leave questions about leave and allowances until the panel invites them or an offer is made.

After the interview

Write down the questions you found hard and improve your examples for next time. Public adverts say only shortlisted or successful candidates will be contacted, and that if you do not hear by the end of the exercise you should consider yourself unsuccessful, so keep applying while you wait.

Do not try to influence the result. The JSC disqualifies candidates who canvass, directly or through others, and says no one should pay money to anyone for any service relating to its recruitment. Never pay to apply, and never pay for a promised pass.

Free help is available. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development offers free counselling and guidance to job seekers through ESMIS, where you can book a virtual or physical meeting with a guidance officer.

Frequently asked questions

What should I carry to a government interview?

Follow the notice. Commissions ask for your National ID and your academic documents, often the originals, and the ESC asked online applicants to bring copies of their application forms. For aptitude tests, the JSC allowed only pens, a National ID and a calculator.

What is an aptitude test?

It is a written test used to assess candidates, often before the oral interview. The ESC and the JSC both used aptitude tests in 2026, and the Standing Orders allow public service examinations or tests before appointment on probation. The notice gives the date, the venue and what you may bring.

Can I ask to move my interview date?

You can ask through the contact in the invitation, but do not count on it with public recruiters. The ESC stated that requests to reschedule its June 2026 oral interviews would not be accepted.

Someone says they can help me pass the interview for money. Is that real?

No. Never pay to apply or to pass. The JSC disqualifies candidates who canvass and says no one should pay money to anyone for any service relating to its recruitment. Report the offer to the police.
